The Cold Plunge Challenge: Taking a dip and taking a stand for women’s health

The Cold Plunge Challenge started as a bold idea, inviting our community to rally around a shared mission: to raise awareness and funds for women’s health and women’s health research. Now, in its second year, the challenge is becoming a powerful movement — shining a light on the often-overlooked areas of women’s health and creating opportunities for connection and conversation.

This year, more than 100 individuals joined in, rallying their friends, families and networks to support efforts to advance science, close data gaps and create healthier futures for women everywhere.

While participants were able to take their plunge anywhere, from a dip in a chilly lake to an ice bath at a local cold plunge facility, one highlight of this year’s challenge was the in-person group plunge hosted on the shores of Cherry Beach on World Menopause Day.

On October 18, more than 40 members of our community gathered for this event. The brisk, beautiful morning started off with a guided breathwork session, led by Nicole from Breathing in Nature, preparing participants for their dip. And then they were off! Some dips were short, some were long, but every single one made an impact.

The water may have been cold, but the atmosphere was warm as attendees chatted with one another about what inspired them to take the plunge and family members cheered them on. But, beyond the splashes and smiles, the Cold Plunge Challenge raised critical funds for women’s health research.

“Taking part in the Cold Plunge Challenge on World Menopause Day, with my cousin, was more than just an experience — it was pure joy, purpose and connection,” says Maricar Elefano—Thelliere, one of the individuals who fundraised for the challenge and attended the in-person event.

“We took the plunge in support of menopause research — a cause that hits close to home as we navigate this stage of life together. The shock, laughter and the post-plunge high made it completely worth it. I’m grateful for this fulfilling experience, for sisterhood, and for supporting women’s health research in such an empowering way.”

Every dollar raised through initiatives like the Cold Plunge Challenge can make a difference in Sinai Health’s efforts to close the gaps that still exist in women’s health research. With your help, we can continue pushing the boundaries of care to help women in every stage of life get the answers and care they deserve.
